The 2008 Monaco Salsa Congress
By Edie, The Salsa FREAK!!When I came to Europe, introducing Los Angeles (LA) Style over ten years ago, Salsa didn’t event EXIST in Monaco. The only thing that existed here was shopping, casinos, race cars, and yachts for the mega-rich.
Now, Monaco boasts some of the top Salsa dancers in the world.
And what’s with all these GOOD-LOOKING MEN over here? I’m telling you… even the Congress Promoter is one of the most handsome men I have ever met! From the Organizers, to the Dancers, to Security Staff … the MEN of the Monaco Salsa Congress are ALL fit, GREAT LOOKING, and any one of them could qualify for the cover of GQ Magazine! No problem!
What’s THAT all about? How did they all end up HERE? Everywhere I looked… the most handsome MEN as far as the eye could see. Eye-candy for the pickiest of Salseras… EVERYWHERE!!
Monaco. WOW!!!
What a beautiful country; what a beautiful event!
I go to quite a few congresses every year, but what is it about this particular congress that is so appealing… so elegant... and so magical? The Monaco congress is like a brilliant little diamond that glimmers like a star, filled with excitement and anticipation. Even the city’s souvenirs of T-shirts, jackets, and hats are made to sparkle like diamonds – representing the Emerald-like city itself… Monaco.
Is it the City?
Well of course the city of Monaco is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world; with its majestic sea cliffs and Royal Palace on the Fortress-Like “Rock” called La Roche built literally on a striking cliff plunging 200 feet straight down.
Everything about this place smells like MONEY; from the multi-million Euro yachts and cliff-mansions, to the exotic Ferraris, Porches, and Lamborghinis, to the sophisticated shopping malls, to the high-class gambling Casinos, to the beautifully manicured Gardens that literally cover the city.
The country of Monaco is what many consider to be The Jewel of Southern Europe. I used to think it was part of France, but Monaco is a country all its own. The Prince of Monaco lives in the Palace itself, overlooking the beautiful “C’ote Dazure (The Blue Coast of the south of France/Monaco). The entire city of Monaco envelopes La Roche on both sides, and is built up along the majestic mountains shooting up from the sea. The way the city was planned and built is an architectural marvel in itself.
The view from La Roche is spectacular. You can see the entire city and coast on either side of the Palace, with the majestic Blue ocean in the front. Unbelievable. You can either walk up the hill to the Palace, or drive by car. Outside the Royal Palace, there are restaurants, shops, boutiques, and bars, along with a magnificent ancient church. The ambiance feels like that of Venice, Italy in a sense.
It Must be the Water
One day, I went for a walk along the docks where some of the most expensive and chique yachts in the world are docked, waiting for their mega-rich owners to get back from ski trips, safaris, and travels abroad. Some of these yachts are worth millions of Euros; even far more than the homes they are docked in front of!
I am here to tell you, the coastal ocean water surrounding Monaco all the way up through nearby Nice, France is literally “Blue”. And I’m NOT kidding.
The day was overcast with clouds. However, when I looked down, the water was lapping up the sides of the glimmering-white multi-million Euro yachts. It was literally a sparkling clear Royal Blue. There were fish abounding everywhere. Yes, the water is literally a deep “BLUE” against the sides of these yachts. The water is so crystal clear, you can literally see straight down to the rocks at the bottom.
Fast Cars and World Class Football
Monaco is also home to the World Famous Monte Carlo Grand Prix car racing, and the country’s Prince is one of the races’ biggest fans. They are also CRAZY about their European Football (soccer) team – boasting one of the finest and most exquisite football fields in all of Europe (the field is right behind the Marriott Hotel where we stayed).
Only the Best
The event this year boasted some of the top International and National instructors and performers in the world. It was awesome seeing the likes of world-renowned instructors like Pedro Gomez, Susanna Montero, and Super Mario. It is always an honor to be a part of this event.
The artists were put up at the Marriott Hotel, overlooking the ocean. Within a few minutes of walking along the boardwalk of the hotel, one can catch a helicopter ride, view the million-Euro view of La Roche, take a walk along the beach, play a round of tennis, sip a coffee at a local café, and visit the surreal Monaco aquatic museum, majestically built within the cliffs, and only visible in its truest splendor, from the sea. The building is truly a work of architectural genius.
Convenience
The Congress location is in the heart of the city. It is only a stone’s throw away from literally “everything”. You can walk to the hotel, the event, the workshops, and all the restaurants within two to seven minutes. It’s refreshing to be able to see the city from a pedestrian’s vantage point. Every day I would walk to the grocery store to buy fruit and veggies. You want for nothing in this city! It’s all right here!
Now Edie goes off on some crazy obscure TANGENT for a sec… hangon!!
A few weeks before, I frantically brushed up on my French, and was actually able to pull off teaching 99.9% of all my classes in French! My father “Guy” is from Contz Les Bains, a small village just outside of Luxembourg, next to the Mosel River, about thirty minutes from Thionville, France. I grew up hearing and speaking only English, because my parents spoke English to each other. Reason: They met at “English – Speaking” school in Kansas City, Missouri, where they learned to speak to each other. My mom is from Mexico and my father from France. It was love at first sight for them – literally. They could not talk to each other until they learned English. Two years later, they were married, then two years after that, they had me. Up until the age of four, I only spoke French to my dad, and Spanish to my mom. I didn’t know English. Once I went to school however, I FORCED my parents to only speak in English to me. I was traumatized that none of the students could understand me, so I vowed only to speak in English – until recently. Of course this was the decision of a four-year old – and yes I do regret not keeping my native tongue up. So my entire life, I only heard and spoke only “English”. I never learned the French language until my parents sent me to live with my grandmother in Luxumbourg when I was fourteen. There, I not only picked up French, but a little “Luxumbourgoise” at the same time! Pretty cool. I learned Spanish teaching Salsa all these years, and hanging around ALL OF YOU. .
And yes, my parents are still together, still speaking English to each other, and still MADLY IN LOVE with each other. I have never seen so much passion between two people in all my life. They’ve been together almost fifty years.
I loved teaching Salsa in French all week!! The week before, I taught in Marseille, France (in French), and also Montpellier, France, where I got to practice teaching Salsa in French as well. Well, I did have some grammar help from the crowd, and it was a little rough and yes, to tell you the truth, it was rather tough (next to impossible for that matter) telling my little “jokes” along the way, so improvising became … hhhmmmm … let’s just say I still need some work in the comedic area of the French language!
ANYWAY. Yes, I am both French and American – by citizenship (bet you didn’t know THAT!) My French heritage is passed down through my dad’s side. It’s cool teaching Salsa in French. In fact, next spring I will be doing an All-French “Full Immersion, Weekend Salsa Bootcamp” in Marsaille, France with Gwen from Salsabroso Dance Studio (

Back to the Congress
The evening parties at the Monaco Congress were to DIE FOR. Holy smokes, the social dancers were AMAZING! What was great was that the dancers didn’t care if you danced on the “One” or the “Two”… Cuban or Puerto Rican (Linear)! They were just interested in dancing… period! It was awesome.
Finding Musicalists in Monaco!!
To tell you the truth, I was more impressed with the Musicalists I found there, that were dancing to the hits and breaks of the MUSIC rather than the “Move Mongers”, “Combo Creeps”, or “Pattern Pricks” that I run into quite a bit throughout the world. Surprisingly, there were actually a small handful of true Musicalists at this event! I could feel that most were instructors who were Budding Musicalists – still a little green, you know “Wet behind the Ears” – types that are still dipping their toes in the Musicality Pond, but I COMMEND THEM ALL for TRULY TRYING!!! We have to START somewhere!!
It is such a THRILL to find a Musicalist on the social dance floor - a Salsero that can become “One” with the Music and take me to places I have NEVER BEEN with his movements and style (especially the handsome ones).
Wow… just the THOUGHT gives me goose bumps!
(Excuse me, while I go take a COLD SHOWER… !!! )
Finding Brie – no, not the CHEESE.
At this event, I danced with as many Salseros as I possibly could, rarely dancing twice with anyone, except for one Salsero in particular by the name of Brie who kept catching my eye because of his Musicality. The way he danced, hitting the breaks, pauses, and crescendos in the music, his style, his moves, and his fun and happy ATTITUDE is what made every woman’s night. Brie helped me teach my Ten Deadly Sins of Lead and Follow class. I truly commend him for taking the class, because I know he is an instructor, and
I always have the utmost respect for instructors that take other instructor’s classes.
Dancing with “Brie and Son Ami”
OK, this was sssssooooo cool. Check out what Brie and company did:
Musicalist Extraordinaire, “Brie” and his great-looking male friend both danced with me at the exact same time – meaning… ok, this is how they did it:
Brie and his friend grasped each other with their arms on each other’s back. One of them led me with his right hand, and the other led me with his left hand. This is an old trick that Juan Calderon of Cultural Explosion did years ago with me in New Jersey, (another world-class Musicalist from Jersey) but I haven’t experienced it since! It was as if I was dancing with ONE GUY, but there were TWO there, holding on to me! It was so cool! And they both were putting me into COMPLICATED patterns, as if they were reading each other’s minds! I had an absolute BALL dancing with those two!
We all danced till the wee hours of the morning, and just could not stop because the music was so sweet (congrats to a great mix of DJs)! The floor was GREAT, the ambiance with GREAT, and the dancers were EXCELLENT!! I had a BLAST!!!
Shopping – “Naturally”
Another really cool thing about the Monaco Salsa Congress is that there are shoe, music, DVD, and clothing vendors at the event directly from Italy.
Wow… I figured that if I can’t get to Milan to buy my Salsa clothes this year, then Milan can come to me! Why not!? …and what better place to go shopping than Monaco… “Dress to Impress” should be the motto for this event. The Italian vendors at this event have some of the BEST dance fashions in the world for both men and women.
So yes… Edie, The Salsa FREAK went “Shopping” at this event.
Why not?
After all, it’s Monaco!!!
